South Miami
Built between 1914 and 1922 on the shores of Biscayne Bay as the winter residence of American businessman James Deering, Vizcaya is unusual among Gilded Age estates. It was envisioned as a subtropical interpretation of an italian villa, with its interiors designed to suggest that the estate had accommodated centuries of change in taste and style. Eighteenth-century sculpture, furniture and painted murals were combined with works by early twentieth-century artists who exhibited at the legendary 1913 Armory Show. A romanticized vision of thebaroque with extensive formal gardens, Vizcaya stands today weathered and mossy in the midst of modern Miami.
